CoolSculpting vs cryo slimming: how they actually differ
If you have spent any time looking into getting rid of stubborn fat without surgery, CoolSculpting is probably the first name you found. It is the name most people reach for, including people who call us about something else entirely.
So it is worth laying the two side by side properly. Both use cold. Both are non-surgical. They are not the same treatment, they do not work the same way, they do not feel the same, and one of them is going to suit you better than the other depending on what you are actually trying to change.
We run a cryo slimming and skin tightening studio in Cedar Park. We do not offer CoolSculpting and we are not affiliated with it. Everything on this page about CoolSculpting is taken from the manufacturer's own published materials, its FDA clearance record, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and published research, and every source is listed at the bottom. We have written its side of this as accurately as we can, including the parts where it is the better choice for someone.
What CoolSculpting is, and how it works
CoolSculpting is a brand name for a procedure called cryolipolysis.
An applicator is placed on the area being treated. The vacuum applicators draw the tissue up into a cup and hold it against the cooling surfaces for the length of the cycle. The surface applicators work differently: they have no cup, so they do not use suction and do not draw the tissue in at all.
The cold makes fat cells in the treated tissue die, and the body then clears them away gradually through its own processes over about four to six months. It is not instant. The treatment happens in an appointment and the result arrives slowly afterwards.
Which applicator you get depends on whether the fat in that area can be pinched. The manufacturer specifies its curve and flat applicators for areas with pinchable fat, such as the flanks, abdomen, inner thigh and upper arm, and separate surface applicators for areas with non-pinchable fat, such as the outer thigh and the upper abdomen. The non-pinchable ones run a longer cycle.
The current system the manufacturer publishes a manual for is CoolSculpting Elite, with a range of applicator sizes and the option of running two applicators at the same time on the same patient.
CoolSculpting Elite is FDA cleared for a defined list of body areas: upper arm, bra fat, back fat, banana roll, thigh, abdomen and flank, plus the submental and submandibular areas under the chin and jaw. The clearance sets body mass index limits, so a provider is meant to check that before treating you.
What cryo slimming is, and how it works
Cryo slimming also uses cold, and that is where the similarity ends.
Nothing is drawn into a cup and nothing is held in place. The person treating you sprays the area with pressurized air at a controlled temperature, working it over the area by hand. The fat cells are brought down to a specific temperature, and temperature is the whole mechanism. Certain temperatures shrink a fat cell. Colder temperatures destroy it. We do both: first destroy the fat cells, then shrink the destroyed cells so they are small enough for the lymphatic system to carry out.
Because the treatment is moved by hand rather than fixed in one footprint, the shape of the treated area is decided by the person holding it rather than by the tool. That is why a core session here includes the obliques, the patch you find if you put your hand in a C shape and press it into your side. Taking that in is what brings a waistline in.
This is targeted fat reduction, and that is the entire point of it. You pick the area. We work that area. Your body does not get a vote on where the inches come off, which is the one thing it always gets a vote on when you lose weight the ordinary way.
Sessions run about 15 to 20 minutes per area, and the appointment gets longer with more areas. There is no downtime, nothing pierces the skin, and you should see slimming and tightening within that first session.
What each one feels like
CoolSculpting
The manufacturer's own list of what to expect during a treatment is sensations of pulling, tugging and mild pinching at the site, then intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, cramping and discomfort, and it notes that these sensations subside as the area becomes numb. After the cycle ends, the provider massages the treated area by hand for two minutes.
Cryo slimming
Cold, but a dry cold, and it does not hurt. Only the section being worked gets cold. Skin adjusts within the first couple of minutes. There is no suction and nothing is clamped.
How long each session takes
CoolSculpting
The manufacturer's published applicator table gives cycle durations of 35, 45 or 75 minutes depending on which applicator is used, with the longest cycles on the surface applicators used for non-pinchable areas. A provider treating more than one area may run two applicators at the same time.
Cryo slimming
About 15 to 20 minutes per area. Your first visit runs about an hour, because we assess the area and build your plan before we treat anything.
How many sessions, and when the results show
CoolSculpting
The official FAQ says most patients need at least two treatment sessions, typically spaced four to eight weeks apart, to get the result they want. It also says most patients start to see results one to three months after treatment, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons puts full clearance of the treated fat cells at four to six months.
Cryo slimming
We do not give a session number before seeing the area, because the honest answer depends on the area and on where you want to end up. We assess it in person at the first visit. You should see slimming and tightening within that first session, and each visit takes another layer.
Downtime and what happens afterwards
CoolSculpting
It is non-surgical, and the manufacturer says there is little to no downtime and that patients can typically return to their normal activities after treatment. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says there are no activity restrictions and that patients sometimes feel sore, as if they had worked out.
Afterwards, the manufacturer's own list of common effects in the treated area covers redness, firmness, blanching, mild bruising, tingling, stinging and skin inflammation straight away, then in the following one to two weeks redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, skin sensitivity and numbness. It describes these as temporary, generally resolving within days or weeks, and notes that the sensory changes, including numbness, can persist up to several weeks after treatment.
Cryo slimming
No downtime and nothing to recover from. Do not put lotion or oil on the area before you come in. Afterwards there is nothing you have to do and nothing you are not allowed to do. Drink water and walk if you want to help your body clear things faster, because the lymphatic system has no pump of its own and moves when you move.
What each one costs
CoolSculpting
We are not going to print a price for a treatment we do not sell, because whatever we printed would be out of date and we would have no way to stand behind it. Here is the number you can check yourself. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes an average cost for nonsurgical fat reduction of $1,157, and says plainly that this average is only part of the total price and does not include other related expenses. Your total also depends on how many areas you have treated and whether an area is treated more than once, so the question worth asking a provider is what the whole plan costs, not what one visit costs.
Cryo slimming at reDEFINE
We do not quote a program price remotely. Every plan is built after we look at the area in person, because two people pointing at the same spot can need very different plans. Your first visit takes about an hour, it includes a session, and you leave knowing what your plan costs.
When CoolSculpting is the better choice for you
A comparison with no scenario where the other option wins is an advertisement, so here is the honest version.
If you want the option with a published clinical evidence base you can go and read for yourself, cryolipolysis has one. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in Obesity Reviews pooled 30 studies covering 3,158 people, and the manufacturer's own manual lists the clinical studies behind each cleared area. That matters to some people a great deal, and it is a reasonable thing to want.
If you want a device with FDA clearance for the specific area you care about, that is a box CoolSculpting ticks, and the cleared list is public.
If you would rather do one long appointment and then wait, CoolSculpting is built that way. Cycles run 35 to 75 minutes, and the result arrives over the following months. Cryo slimming is built around shorter visits that come back.
If your provider is the right person, that outranks the device. Whichever of the two you pick, the result is made by the person operating it.
When cryo slimming is the better choice for you
If you want the treated area shaped by hand rather than by an applicator footprint. Obliques, the underside of an arm, the area around a knee. Treatment moved by hand follows the shape you are actually trying to change.
If you want targeted reduction in one specific spot. You point at it, we work it. That is what this is for.
If you want the skin tightened as well as the inches taken off, not only the fat reduced. That is what our sessions are built to do at the same time.
If you want to see something on the first visit. You should see slimming and tightening within that first session.
If you cannot give up your day. No suction, no bruising to plan around, and nothing to recover from.
If you want to be assessed before being sold anything. We do not quote a plan until we have looked at the area.
Questions people ask about the two
Is cryo slimming the same as CoolSculpting?
No. Both use cold on fat and that is the extent of the overlap. CoolSculpting's vacuum applicators draw tissue into a cup and hold it against the cooling surfaces for a cycle of 35 to 75 minutes. Cryo slimming sprays pressurized air at a controlled temperature across the area by hand, with no suction, in shorter sessions.
Which one is better?
That depends on what you are trying to change, what shape it is, and how you want to spend your time. This page lays out both so you can decide. Anyone who answers that question without looking at the area is guessing.
Do you offer CoolSculpting at reDEFINE?
No. We are a cryo slimming and skin tightening studio in Cedar Park. We do not provide CoolSculpting and we are not affiliated with it.
Are the results permanent?
On the CoolSculpting side, the manufacturer's own FAQ says that once the treated fat cells have been eliminated by the body they are gone for good. On our side, the fat cells we destroy are gone and they do not come back. With either one, the fat cells you still have behave the way they always have, so what you do afterwards matters.
Is either one a weight loss treatment?
The manufacturer states plainly that CoolSculpting and CoolSculpting Elite are not treatments for weight loss. Ours is not one either. Both are about changing the shape of a specific area rather than the number on a scale.
How do I know which one I need?
Come and have the area looked at. That is what a first visit is for, and it takes about an hour.
